Offenbach - La Belle Helene / Minkowski, Lott, Beuron, Senechal, Naouri, Le Roux, Torodovitch, Chatelet Opera

(more) »rank: 60996

starring: Felicity Lott, Yann Beuron, Michel Sénéchal, François Le Roux, Laurent Naouri

Editorial Product Review:Description:Staged and costumed by Laurent Pelly, this production Offenbach’s parody of the origins of the Trojan War is a supreme manifestation of his comic genius. It combines a musically superb performance with a stream of visual humour that flows from Pelly’s core idea that the action all takes place in the imagination of a sleeping, sex-starved, suburban housewife. Dame Felicity Lott is magnificent as the woman who dreams of being the most beautiful woman in the world. The production explodes with gaiety and invention throughout and 'is as innocently filthy ...

Editorial Product Review:Description:Dame Felicity Lott stars in a rollicking performance of Offenbach's operetta 'La Grande Duchesse de Gerolstein.' Features the same cast as the studio recording released on CD in October 2005. The stage production was filmed in December 2004 at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. The result is a kaleidoscope of artistry and comedy that should not be missed! Rameau - Platee / Agnew, Delunsch, Beuron, Naouri, Le Texier, Lamprecht, Minkowski, Paris Opera

(more) »rank: 24969

starring: Paul Agnew, Marc Minkowski, Mireille Delunsch, Yann Beuron, Laurent Naouri

Editorial Product Review:Description:This Paris Opera production of Rameau’s burlesque on the vicissitudes of love, is a 'pure joy from start to splashing finish' (Wall Street Journal Europe). 'Laurent Pelly’s staging of Platée is an exhilarating display of gags and West Side Story dance routines mixed in with satirical rap...Marc Minkowski conducting the excellent Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble was the instigator of a sparkling orchestral fête' (Opera Now). 'Véritable révélation musicale et dramaturgique, la production n’a rien perdu de son implacable cruauté, de son joyeux piquant ni de sa noirceur et de son ineffable ...

Gluck - Alceste / Robert Wilson · John Eliot Gardiner · Anne Sofie von Otter · English Baroque Soloists · Théâtre du Chatelet

(more) »rank: 42913

starring: Anne Sofie von Otter, Paul Groves, Dietrich Henschel, Yann Beuron, Ludovic Tézier
directed by: Brian Large

Editorial Product Review:Description:Robert Wilson's production of Gluck's 1776 French version of Alceste is striking with theatrical symbols. The intriguing visual arena is complemented by the fact that the piece is conducted for the first time with a period instrument ensemble, the English Baroque Soloists. The excellent Monteverdi Choir provides the chorus, with dancers taking their place on stage. Together, they give a magnificently persuasive expression to the horror and compassion demanded by Christoph Willibald Gluck's most elevated and sublime works. 133 minutes. :Rebelling against the increasingly formulaic operas of the time, Christoph ...

Editorial Product Review: :Rebelling against the increasingly formulaic operas of the time, Christoph Willibald Gluck's 'reformist' opera Alceste (1767) was a successful attempt to return to a purer form of musical drama. It is highly appropriate that this 1999 production of the revised 1776 Paris version should be conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner, with the English Baroque Soloists and Monteverdi Choir, the same forces responsible for many fine Bach performances equally emphasizing character and text. In setting the tragic story of the profound love between Queen Alceste and her husband King Admète, ...

Sales of semiconductors in November indicate that consumer products such as LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs, digital music players, and other devices sold well during the holidays, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said Monday.

November chip sales rose 2.3 percent year-on-year to $23.1 billion, the SIA said.

Unit demand has far outpaced last year. But falling chip prices have hurt industry revenue, the chip association said. For example, DRAM (dynamic RAM) bit shipments grew 25 percent in the three months through mid-December, but average selling prices have declined 20 percent over the same period.

The association also noted that rising energy prices and concerns about the sub-prime lending issue in the U.S. do not appear to have had a significant impact on consumer spending for the holidays, the SIA said. The group reiterated its forecast that worldwide semiconductor sales will reach a new record in 2007. But it will take a stronger than expected December selling season to reach the 3.8 percent growth goal the group had forecast earlier this year, the SIA said.

Investment banking firm Credit Suisse was not as optimistic as the SIA.

The November data was below normal seasonal trends, noted analyst John Pitzer, in a report on Monday. Even if December reaches its normal seasonal growth, 2007 industry revenue will only reach $255.7 billion, up 3.2 percent over last year. The growth percentage would fall short of the SIA's 3.8 percent target.

The slow November prompted Credit Suisse to lower its 2008 chip industry revenue forecast to 9.4 percent year-on-year growth, down from a previous target of 13 percent.
