Mary Poppins (2005 Original London Cast)

(more) »rank: 1133

from: Walt Disney Records

Editorial Product Review: : Mary Poppins may be one of the most beloved film musicals of all time, but it took 30 long years for it to transfer to the stage. This recording of the original London cast shows the wait was worthwhile though. The new version mixes in elements from both the original books by P.L. Travers (which she started publishing in 1934) and the Disney movie starring Julie Andrews, from 1964. (Mary seems to take 30 years to do anything.) Most of the original songs by brothers Richard and Robert Sherman (Chitty Chitty ...

A Robert Shaw Christmas - Angels on High

(more) »rank: 2747

from: Telarc

Editorial Product Review: :In this beautifully chosen program of mostly a cappella arrangements, Robert Shaw and the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers deliver the Christmas story in tones of gentle and moving splendor. The carols and sacred settings recorded here are all of an intimate sort, and the rapturous, gently expressive realizations Shaw and his singers give them prove unfailingly appealing. Particularly moving is the newest work on the disc, a setting of 'O magnum mysterium' by the American composer Morten Lauridsen. Franz Biebl's 'Ave Maria' is another gem, as is the arrangement by Healy Willan ...

Faure Requiem Op.48 / Durufle Requiem Op.9

(more) »rank: 4262

by: Gabriel Fauré, Maurice Duruflé, Judith Blegen, James Morris

Editorial Product Review: :The chorus is at center of Shaw's reading of the score, presumably the more lightly scored 1893 version that Fauré‚ himself created (Telarc does not specify). The account flows very well, and the work of both soloists is highly satisfying, particularly Judith Blegen's airy soprano in Pie Jesu. The recording dates from 1985-86 and is one of Telarc's best, with excellent presence overall and real bass in the organ. --Ted Libbey

Verdi: Requiem & Operatic Choruses

(more) »rank: 7201

from: Telarc

Editorial Product Review: :Robert Shaw learned from Arturo Toscanini, and in his stupendous 1987 recording for Telarc he managed to surpass the master on some points. He is unerring in his pacing and staging of climaxes, and draws phrasing and dynamics from the chorus that other conductors can only dream of. Points are made with exhilarating effect throughout the account: never has the bass drum in the Dies irae been as splendidly hammered as here, and the whooping brass in the Tuba mirum is breathtaking. The all-American solo quartet sounds a bit driven, especially the ...
