Editorial Product Review: :The old master shows the rest of us how it ought to be done. In his nineties, Mieczyslaw Horszowski played Bach with purpose and clarity, never letting his beautiful tone blur the contours of the music. His Schumann is exquisitely characterized, with every little miniature having a life of its own, and again the luminous tone contributes much to the overall effect. Three pieces of Chopin are real object lessons in playing that master idiomatically, the rhythms are flexible but still clear and the music seems almost to be sung instead of ...

Editorial Product Review: :Mieczyslaw Horszowski, who lived to be 100, was a great artist who made many superb recordings, some of the best when he was in his 90s. But he never had the technique to play the Hammerklavier Sonata (No. 29), and his frequent struggles with the music prevent him from being able to give a convincing performance. The other two sonatas are also difficult, giving the pianist some shaky moments, but he still manages to achieve meaningful interpretations. At the very low price, the set may be worth having, though these are not ...
Editorial Product Review: :The pianist who made this recording was in his nineties and could hardly see or even hear. Yet Mieczyslaw Horszowski could still get around the keys well enough. (The recordings weren't all splicing; I heard him live at about this time.) You won't hear the most powerful virtuosity here; it isn't required by the music anyway. But you will hear some of the most beautifully expressive, nuanced, communicative piano playing ever recorded by anyone. It seemed the older Horszowski got, the better he played. We are fortunate he lived long enough to ...

Editorial Product Review: :These are nearly ideal performances, without exception. Mieczyslaw Horszowski's Mozart is played directly, but with a wealth of nuance that conveys every subtle flicker of emotion in the music. The comfortable way he plays the tricky finale of K. 332 is remarkable. Three Chopin pieces--two mazurkas and a nocturne--are kept within fairly strict rhythmic bounds, while almost imperceptible emphases point our attention towards every expressive intention. The two Schumann works are equally remarkable. Only a faint hint of blurring in moments of Kinderszenen, barely noticeable, provides a clue that the pianist was ...

Usually we're fans of Logitech's gaming mice, but its highest-end G9 Laser Mouse is expensive, overly complex, and lacks the ergonomic thought we've come to expect. If you like to brag about dot-per-inch limits, perhaps the G9's 3,200dpi laser will be enough to sell you, but for the price, we expect the design to match.
