Editorial Product Review: :Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole is a riot of instrumental color and virtuoso challenges; exactly Jascha Heifetz's piece of cake, as are Saint-Saëns's Havanaise, Chausson's Poème and Sarasate's Zigeunerweise (Gypsy Tunes). The sound is pre-stereo but well detailed. One movement of the Lalo is left out, but there are plenty of fireworks in the four that remain. --Joe McLellan

Editorial Product Review: :This compilation of selections from recordings made between 1975 and 1998, including one previously unreleased to create a framework, is a curious mix. All the pieces are slow, and this being the age of the soundbite, none is longer than five minutes except the Romance by Dvorák, who is also represented by two other popular pieces, specifically arranged to include a cello part for Yo-Yo Ma. Half the program consists of 'themes' from movie soundtracks, and the comparison between them is interesting. John Williams, André Previn, and Max Steiner are film composers ...

Editorial Product Review: :At the end of his life, Franck composed three chamber music masterpieces which, along with the popular Symphony in D minor, placed him at the forefront of French composers of 'abstract' instrumental music. This piano quintet is one of those masterpieces. Like the Symphony in D minor, it has three movements and it's constructed according to the principals of cyclical form, which simply means that the various movements share some themes. It's an absolutely gorgeous piece of music, and this award-winning recording is the finest available performance of it. With an ample ...
Alienware's flagship gaming laptop, the Area-51 m9750, has plenty of appeal for high-end gamers, but the alien head aesthetic seems dated, and newer components are right around the corner.
