Editorial Product Review: :The hypnotic rhythms of Aztec drums and hautning sounds of Mesoamerican wind instruments blend with the seven voice of SAVAE in this companior recording to their bestselling 'Guadalupe: Virgen de Los Indios.' The music, dating from the mid-16th century reflects the unprecedentd vangelization that occurred as result of the appearance of the Virgin Mary to the Nahua Inidan Juan Dieo in 1531.

Editorial Product Review: :The all-male, all-professional, full-time choir Chanticleer has developed a phenomenal following during the past couple of decades, and this Christmas disc contains some of the group's best-loved repertoire. Topping the list is Chanticleer's most-requested concert piece, Franz Biebl's intensely moving 'Ave Maria,' followed by Joseph Jenning's uninhibited, spirited 'Medley of Christmas Spirituals.' Along the way, we hear a wide variety of sacred works, from the 15th century ('There Is No Rose') to the 20th (Benjamin Britten's 'A Hymn to the Virgin'). Due to its exclusive use of male voices--even sopranos--Chanticleer projects a ...

Handel: Messiah

(more) »rank: 127111

from: Sony

Editorial Product Review: :This performance is demented. Leonard Bernstein cuts a bunch of numbers, and divides the piece into two parts instead of the usual three. He does use a countertenor (the strange-sounding Russell Oberlin), which was unusual in the late '50s when this was recorded, but his interpretation isn't just un-Baroque, it's also unlike anything else you could possibly imagine. Slow, heavy, and totally unidiomatic, this recording is valuable only to Bernstein fanatics. --David Hurwitz
