Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 / Karajan, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra

(more) »rank: 4460

from: Deutsche Grammophon

Editorial Product Review: :This performance is also available on Deutsche Grammophon in an earlier, mid-price incarnation, but this version is clearly the one to own, since the remastered sound is a definite improvement over previous issues. Herbert von Karajan always did a good job with this symphony, and his performances are quite consistent, even down to the very backward-balance of the chorus. By general consensus, though, this is the best of them. --David Hurwitz

The Pyongyang Concert - New York Philharmonic & Lorin Maazel [Blu-ray]

starring: New York Philharmonic, Lorin Maazel
directed by: Ayelet Heller

Editorial Product Review: :On February 26, 2008, the world watched as the New York Philharmonic gave the first performance by an American orchestra in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The Essential Yo-Yo Ma

(more) »rank: 5446

from: Sony

Editorial Product Review: : Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the 'Meditation' from Thais simply ravishing, 'Anything Goes' a romp, ...
