Bach: St. Matthew Passion / Rolfe Johnson, Bonney, von Otter, Chance, Crook; Gardiner

(more) »rank: 54059

by: Cornelius Hauptmann, Bach:St. Matthew Passion, London Oratory Junior Singers, Olaf Bär, Monteverdi Choir

Editorial Product Review: essential recording:John Eliot Gardiner's reading of the Matthew Passion is conceived and executed on the highest level, an example of period practice that is unlikely to be bettered any time soon. The performance as a whole vibrates with life: soloists are first-rate, and wonderfully well chosen for their respective parts, and the work of chorus and orchestra is exemplary. The recording, made in 1988 in the spacious ambience of Snape Maltings (England), is well balanced and exceptionally vivid. --Ted Libbey

Classic Wynton

from: Sony

Editorial Product Review: :Wynton Marsalis may not have an easily recognizable or even particularly handsome tone, but this erstwhile jazz trumpeter is an amazing virtuoso with a fine sense of classical style. If you've never owned/heard any of his classical CDs, and you love (mostly baroque) trumpet music, this compilation--a sort of 'greatest hits'--is for you. From such cruddy, sensationalistic works as Carnival of Venice to the glories of Haydn's E-Flat Concerto, this is grand entertainment. Marsalis is joined by Kathleen Battle in an exciting version of ...

Hemy, Chuck / Shamblin, Allen Jones, Charlie Landsborough, John Newton, Stuart Townsend, Traditional, Irish Traditional, Shaker Traditional, Stevie Wonder, Arnie Roth, Orchestr Ceská Filharmonie, Anthony Kearns, Finbar Wright, Irish Tenors

Editorial Product Review:From the Label:Sacred marks John McDermott's first recording with the Irish Tenors since rejoining fellow original member Anthony Kearns and Finbar Wright (who actually replaced McDermott in 2000). The Irish Tenors live up to their reputation as 'gifted interpreters' with this collection, covering a wide range of spiritual material. Sacred was produced by the Irish Tenors' long-time musical director, Arnie Roth, who has also worked with Charlotte Church, Diana Ross, and Art Garfunkel. The album was produced in Prague at the Rudlofinum and ICN ...

Morimur

from: ECM Records

Editorial Product Review: 's Best of 2001:In 1994, explains the booklet that accompanies Morimur, Professor Helga Thoene made the surprising discovery that the monumental 'Ciaccona' from Bach's Partita in D minor for solo violin was built around various chorale themes hidden in the music. From the texts of these 'secret' chorales and other symbolic musical devices, she deduced that the 'Ciaccona' was an epitaph for Bach's wife, Maria Barbara. The revelation might have remained an intriguing (and touching) footnote to Bach scholarship if baroque violinist Christoph Poppen ...

Britten: A Ceremony of Carols

(more) »rank: 26438

from: Hyperion UK

Editorial Product Review: essential recording:Of the many accounts of Britten's Ceremony of Carols in the catalog, this one is the best. This was the first work Britten wrote for boys' voices, and with his keen ear and extraordinary imagination, he achieved many wondrous and memorable effects. At the heart of this 1986 performance are the boys of the Westminster Cathedral Choir, obviously a well-trained group. With their outstanding intonation and hearty sound, these London boys outclass all the competition. Their singing is free and expressive, yet ...

Cecilia Bartoli ~ Opera Proibita (Handel · Scarlatti · Caldara) / Les Musiciens du Louvre · Minkowski

(more) »rank: 5657

from: Decca

Editorial Product Review: :Cecilia Bartoli's new CD features a collection of music that could not be heard in her native Rome at the start of the 18th century due to Papal censorship. Theaters, the Church felt, were places of evil and corruption and operas led people to immorality. But some music-loving senior members of the priesthood asked composers to write oratorios and cantatas--indeed, operas without staging, essentially--for their own private entertainment. Call it what you will, the music is sensational--by turns virtuosic, gentle, and playful--and always expressive: ...
