Editorial Product Review:Album Description:Of all the major composers of the 20th century, none was more warmly embraced by the world of Rock music than Stravinsky. Along with Edgard Varese, he was the principal influence on the compositions of Frank Zappa, while numerous avant-garde and Progressive Rock bands - among them Yes, who would take the stage to the accompaniment of The Firebird - proclaimed him their guiding light. The obvious reasons for this are his pioneering use of powerful and unusual rhythms, his music's lack of sentimentality, its waspish wit, its anti-authoritarianism - not ...

Editorial Product Review: :Kent Nagano is a young and brilliant figure among contemporary conductors, and perhaps this suits him for the music of Varese, the audacious French rebel. The purity of Phyllis Bryn-Julson's soprano contrasts with the static, almost metallic blocks of sound that characterize Varese's Offrandes--the instrumental writing seems to flaunt itself in the face of traditional notions of beauty. Nagano's strategy is not to smooth over the harshness of Varese's music; he lets it vibrate and sizzle. --Joshua Cody

No other composer of our time was so completely at home in so many forms and styles; no other knew so well how to adapt sounds from the past--medieval, baroque, classical and even, near the end of his career, 12-tone, to suit his own purposes. A brilliantly original creator, he also plundered the music of other composers such as Gesualdo, Pergolesi, and Tchaikovsky--even 'Happy Birthday to You' in his hilarious 'Greeting Prelude.' But he made this music his own and transformed ...
